The State Minister for Foreign Affairs represented the Government of Bangladesh at the invitation of Turkish government to the Presidential Handover Ceremony of the Republic of Turkey

Press Release, 28 August 2014

State Minister for Foreign Affairs Md. Shahriar Alam, MP conveyed the greetings of the Hon’ble President and Hon’ble Prime Minister of Bangladesh to the newly elected Turkish President Mr. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

The State Minister for Foreign Affairs is on a two-day official visit to Ankara to represent the government of Bangladesh at the invitation of Turkish government to the Presidential Handover Ceremony of the Republic of Turkey. The handover ceremony took place on 28 August at the Presidential Palace in Ankara, while Mr. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan took over the charge of the Presidency of Turkey from outgoing President Mr. Abdullah Gul. The erstwhile Prime Minister of Turkey, Mr. Erdoğan, was elected President of Turkey in the first-ever popular presidential vote held on 10 August, 2014. The ceremony was witnessed by dignitaries from more than 90 countries including the Head of State, Head of Government, Speaker of Parliament, Minister and Head of the International Organizations.

As the handover ceremony was over, the Turkish President interacted twice in a very welcoming mood with the State Minister for Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh. Mr. Erdoğan expressed his thanks to the government of Bangladesh for sending congratulatory messages to him on assumption of his new position. He also enquired about the current state of trade and economy in Bangladesh. The State Minister apprised him that the economy of Bangladesh had been growing at a consistent rate of over 6 (six) percent and the export volume crossed 32 billion US dollar mark. He also informed the Turkish President that bilateral trade volume between Bangladesh and Turkey had been increasing.

Bangladesh calls for greater trade and investment relations with Turkey

Earlier on 27 August, Mr. Shahriar Alam held a meeting with the top executives of TURK EXIM Bank in Ankara and discussed in details the ways and means to utilise the US$ 300 million annual Line of Credit, which would be utilized by the private sector ventures in Bangladesh. The State Minister emphasized that the credit line could be used for infrastructure projects in Bangladesh as well as for financing Turkish exports to Bangladesh. He also requested the EXIM Bank to reduce the rate of interest on the credit line. He invited potential Turkish investors to take advantage of the favourable business environment Bangladesh. TURK EXIM Bank officials concurred with Mr. Alam, and informed that they would send a high-level delegation to Bangladesh in October this year to discuss further and find the means for early utilization of the credit line. The Bangladesh Ambassador in Turkey and Mission officials were also present during the meeting.

The State Minister also held a meeting with the President of the Ankara Chamber of Commerce Mr. Salih Bezci. They both agreed to strengthen further trade cooperation between Bangladesh and Turkey. The two countries’ bilateral trade now stands at US$ 1.2 billion, hugely in favour of Bangladesh. Mr. Alam also briefed the Ankara Chamber of Commerce about the most favourable foreign direct investment regime in Bangladesh and called upon its members to take full advantage of it. He also mentioned about the strategic location of Bangladesh sandwiched among large markets like China, India and South-East Asia making Bangladesh an attractive FDI destination.
