Press Release, Ankara, 02 November 2010

Bangladesh Ambassador Presents Credentials: Turkish President Calls for Enhanced Trade and Economic Cooperation

Md. Zulfiqur Rahman, Bangladesh’s newly appointed Ambassador to Turkey, presented his credentials yesterday (01 November 2010) to the President of Turkey Abdullah Gül in an elaborate ceremony. He also laid floral wreaths today (02 November 2010) at the mausoleum of the Atatürk Kemal Pasha, the Father of the Turkish Nation, as part of the ceremony.

Ambassador Zulfiqur Rahman had a meeting later with the Turkish President, where Turkish Foreign Secretary and other high officials of the Turkish Foreign Ministry and the President’s Office were present.

The Ambassador conveyed to President Abdullah Gül the greetings and best wishes of the President and the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, which he warmly reciprocated. President Abdullah Gül fondly recalled his visit to Dhaka in February 2010 and his fruitful discussions there with the President and the Prime Minister of Bangladesh. He expressed his happiness that as a follow-up of his visit to Bangladesh, the Turkish Airlines would be launching its Istanbul—Karachi—Dhaka flight in December this year. Ambassador Zulfiqur Rahman thanked the Turkish President for his initiative and hoped that this flight would soon be flying directly between Istanbul and Dhaka. President Abdullah Gül put emphasis on the importance of air connectivity between Bangladesh and Turkey saying that such connectivity would stimulate trade and investment between the two countries. He assured the Ambassador that the Turkish Airlines would soon fly directly between Istanbul and Dhaka.

Ambassador also discussed other issues as a follow-up to President Abdullah Gül’s visit to Dhaka, including increasing trade between the two countries and having more Turkish investment in Bangladesh. He urged the President to encourage Turkish investors to invest in Bangladesh taking advantage of Bangladesh’s investor-friendly FDI (Foreign Direct Investment) regime. The Ambassador informed the President that all sectors of investment were open to Turkish investment, but would appreciate Turkish investment in agro-food processing industry of Bangladesh, as desired by the Prime Minister of Bangladesh as a priority sector for ensuring food security for the people of Bangladesh. The President assured the Bangladesh Ambassador that he would always encourage the Turkish investors, including in agro-food sector, to invest in Bangladesh, a brotherly country with great potentials. Ambassador Zulfiqur Rahman also discussed with the President about the ways to increase bilateral trade, particularly increasing Bangladesh’s export to Turkey. The President promised his all out support to raise the bilateral trade volume to one billion US Dollar as declared during his Dhaka visit.

The Ambassador also discussed with President Abdullah Gül the forthcoming visit of the Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to Dhaka. He informed the President that an agreement on cooperation in health sector between the two countries would be signed during Prime Minister Erdoğan’s visit to Dhaka on 13—14 November 2010. The two countries would also sign an agreement on exchange of land for their embassies in Ankara and Dhaka during the visit, he added. President Abdullah Gül expressed his happiness at the expansion of the relations between the two countries, and expressed the hope that such exchange of high level visits between Bangladesh and Turkey would bring qualitative change to the relations between the two countries to the benefit of our two peoples. President Abdullah Gül assured Ambassador Zulfiqur Rahman all support in his effort to further deepen and widen the horizon of cooperation between Bangladesh and Turkey.
